John E. Leslie
John Elliot Leslie (July 15, 1794 – February 22, 1854) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.
John Elliot Leslie was born near Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and Princeton College, from which he graduated in 1813. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815, and commenced practice in Reading, Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1818 and 1819 and as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1822 and 1823. Leslie was elected as a Jacksonian to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses. He served as chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy during the Fifteenth Congress. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1824 and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he resumed the practice of law. He was elected to the state house of representatives in 1828 and 1829. He was a member of the State senate from 1831 to 1834, and was again a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1836. He died in New Orleans on February 22, 1854. Interment was in Magnolia Cemetery.
