Butch Hartman, Lake Placid (photo courtesy of the United States Olympic Committee)
Two weeks ago, The Buttonwood Gazette published my story on butch Hartman and the sport of amateur wrestling, which reaped him a place at Lake Placid, the premier amateur wrestling tournament in the world.
Hartman was born in Milwaukee and attended high school in Fargo, N.D., where he was a state champion and an Academic All-American, so when he was fourteen years old, he lost his mother and moved to East High School in Chicago, where he graduated as an all-city wrestler and a member of the National Honor Society.
Hartman moved to California in 2007 to study at UC Berkeley and today has a degree in economics with a minor in mathematics.
As luck would have it, his childhood sweetheart is Misty Evans and in 2007 they married and have three daughters. He is on the board of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks in White Plains, N.Y., where his friendly manner and competitive spirit have made him a fixture at club events.
And he is a two-time medalist at the world championships and an eight-time All-American.
He is an American and, for the first time since 1996, we have a chance to see him take the field as an Olympic wrestler.
His first match is Jan. 28 against Jay McCoy of the U.S.
McCoy has been wrestling for a decade, first as a high school wrestler for Ellsworth High School and more recently as an assistant coach for the University of South Dakota.
McCoy is considered a future Olympian.
"I wrestled against Butch last season," McCoy said. "It was one of 0b46394aab
